The Painters and Sculptors Association of Australia will be paying tribute to Judy Cassab at a luncheon at Arte e Cucina, 2 Short St, Double Bay on Saturday March 6 2004. The Association’s medal will be presented to Ms Cassab by the Hon. Justice Michael Kirby.
Judy Cassab is one of Australia’s foremost artists whose career has spanned 70 years. During that time she has been widely acclaimed both for her portraits and her landscapes and has been winner of the Archibald Prize (twice), the Womans Weekly Prize (twice), the Helena Rubenstein Prize (twice), Charles Lloyd Jones Prize (3 times). The Perth Prize, The Wynne Watercolour Prize (4 times). In 2003 she won both the Art Gallery of New South Wales Pring Prize and Trustees Watercolour Prize.
The presentation of this prestigious medal by the Association has been made to a very limited number of artists including the Late Lloyd Rees, Late Arthur Boyd, John Olsen, Charles Blackman, John Coburn and Margaret Olley.
About 100 people will attend the luncheon in Ms Cassab’s honour. Luminaries present will include Jack Thompson, Margaret Olley, Hon Bob Hawke, Jill Wran, Charles Blackman, Sir Bruce Williams, Dame Leonie Kremer, Gary Shead, Jim Fleming, John Olsen, Caroline Jones, Edmund Capon and Hon Jim Spiegleman
Public portraits by Ms Cassab include Princess Marina, The Duke and Duchess of Kent (at Wimbledon), Princess Alexandra (Glasgow Medical Academy), Hugh Gaitskell (National Portrait Gallery, London), Queen Sirikit (Bangkok Palace) and Dame Joan Sutherland (Sydney Opera House)
Last year the Hungarian-born artist had exhibitions at the National Gallery in Budapest as well as in Canberra, Berlin and Dublin. Next month she will exhibit at the European Union in Brussels in an exhibition jointly hosted by the Australian and Hungarian Embassies there to mark Hungary’s accession to the European Union. In June she will exhibit at Michael Carr Galleries, Queen St Woollahra
